Sam, I am

Hi, I'm Nick.

I play Sam in the brand new NUIG radio Drama, College Road. Sam is a nice guy whose good at being there for his friends, but doesnt really know who he is. This is my first experience in voice acting, and its a hell of a lot of fun.
I thought I'd share a little.

The actors normally arrive to the small acoustic room in Aras na Mac Leinn around nine every friday morning. The first day I arrived I couldnt believe that I was actually being fed. Once I got past the shock of being up way too early and got a hit of coffee, I was flying it.

First morning was great. We all just got to hang around a bit and shoot the breeze. I was lucky enough to have a few friends on the cast already, but I've met some cool new people too.

Everyone involved is a pleasure. Theres too many people to list, but trust me. I know gossip is more interesting, but the atmosphere in the group is always fun and we all have great craic between recording sessions. I'll avoid saying things like "we're one big happy family", because its a grimy cliche. Though after weeks of productive friday mornings, there is a certain sense of camaraderie.

Recording is an interesting process. You clamp a pair of massive headphones on and then you read your lines into a mic without spitting or shouting. You'd think that would be really easy, wouldn't you? "Ohh, Its just talkin'" I hear you mutter. Its a little trickier than that though. Its the difference between rocking out on a dancefloor at two in the morning and taking salsa lessons at four in the day. You're aware of everything, every inflection, every breath, every cadence in your speech. It takes some getting used to, but it's worth it for that rush when you know you nailed it.

And you can hear that. Your own voice is coming crystal clear back to you, so you know exactly what you're doing. Or at the very least, you don't have an excuse if you don't.

College Road is an episodic radio drama about the lives of a group of people who live on a road in the shadows of the University of Galway.
This blog is by the characters in College Road, the actors themselves, the writers and producers.
Any kind of post about the show is welcome from the point of view of the characters, actors and writers.


They are students, academics and everyday people who are struggling through transition and all are unified by their relationship with the university. It is set in present time and focuses on a house of students, a B&B, an immigrant's home, a professor's temporary home and the local shop. The general locations are the houses on the road itself, the campus of the university and the city of Galway.
